Dear Colleague
July 2016 update to the Code of Practice
On 4 July 2015, we will publish an update to the Code of Practice. I am writing to inform you about those changes, which primarily relate to embryo testing.
Over the years, embryo testing technologies have developed to enable practitioners to carry out the same tests with increased speed and accuracy. The latest technologies make it possible to test for more than one genetic condition or abnormality at a time. This has implications for how we regulate embryo testing, how clinics use these technologies within the boundaries of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 (as amended), and how patients are informed and supported while their embryos undergo testing.
In response to these developments, we have reviewed our guidance and updated the sections of the Code of Practice relating to preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). Further information on this is provided at Annex I.
We have also updated the ‘Other legislation, professional guidelines and information’ section in a number of guidance notes. These now include links to previously issued Clinic Focus articles where we have provided clarification on certain areas to help you find all relevant guidance in one place.
A list of changes in this Code of Practice update are listed at Annex II; actual amendments are highlighted at Annex III. Please read these updated guidance notes and make sure that you and your staff are familiar with changes that affect your centre. If you have any questions, please contact your inspector.
Yours sincerely
Sally Cheshire
